The New Covenant

For if there had been a law given which could have given life, truly righteousness would have been by the law. But the Scripture has confined all under sin, that the promise by faith in Jesus Christ might be given to those who believe. But before faith came, wew, kept for the faith which would afterward be revealed.
Galatians 3:21-23
The New covenant was made to free man from the old covenant which was impossible for man to observe and obey.
And for this reason He is the Mediator of the new covenant, by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions under the first covenant, that those who are called may receive the promise of the eternal inheritance.
Hebrews 9:15
The first covenant was established with the sprinkling of blood of the sacrificed animals.
These laws were very difficult to obey and as they didn’t keep the covenant which they agreed to obey they came under the wrath of God. Many a time they were exiled from the promised land and later given under the oppression of the gentiles. Jesus came in the fullness of time and He proclaimed
, “The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, Because He has anointed Me To preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to the captives And recovery of sight to the blind, To set at liberty those who are oppressed;
Luke 4:18
The new covenant was made in place of the old, in order to redeem man as prophesied.
“Behold, the days are coming, says the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah., My covenant which they broke, though I was a husband to them, says the Lord.
Jeremiah 31:31-32
Israel often turned away from the Lord who walked with them as a pillar of light and a pillar of cloud and as the rock who gave them water in the wilderness. Still most of them took Him lightly and turned towards Gentile gods. God loved man so much that He gave His only begotten Son for them so that whoever believes in Him will not perish but will have everlasting life. According to the old covenant there is no remission of sin without the shedding of blood. Jesus shed His blood for the remission of man’s sin. Jesus bore all our sins and curses and was executed in our place. When the stiffnecked and ungrateful Israelites rebelled and murmured against God He sent serpents to kill them. When Moses lamented for them God told him to raise a brazen serpent to look upon in order to get saved from their bites.
And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life.
John 3:14-15
Thus the New covenant was made to redeem us from the transgressions of the first covenant, to get saved just by faith alone in the crucified Christ and not by any action on man’s side. Jesus is the bread of life sent from heaven so that whoever eats Him will have eternal life. His blood was shed for us, to redeem us by purifying us from all transgressions and iniquities. This is the New covenant that whoever partakes of the bread and wine which stand for His body and His blood will live forever.
On the Passover day Jesus established the new covenant.
“And He took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, “This is My body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of Me.” Likewise He also took the cup after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood, which is shed for you.”
Luke 22:19-20. Jesus made the New covenant with the Jews.
It was God’s plan for the Jews to establish His kingdom on earth through them that the whole humanity should be saved by faith in the crucified Christ, who was the blemishless lamb of atonement of the Old Testament, as Christ Jesus came for the fulfilment of law.
As the Jews didn’t accept Him as their passover lamb God changed His plan and chose Paul as the harbinger and ambassador of the dispensation of grace so that anyone who believed in His crucifixion would be saved through grace and not through deeds.
God revealed to Paul the church as the body of Christ.
For I received from the Lord that which I also delivered to you: that the Lord Jesus on the same night in which He was betrayed took bread; and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, “Take, eat; this is My body which is broken for you; do this in remembrance of Me.” In the same manner He also took the cup after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”
I Corinthians 11:23-25
This is the reason we partake of the Lord’s Table, New covenant of the bread and wine which represents His body and blood.
Loving heavenly Father, we thank You and praise you for loving us so much that You gave Your Son for the remission of our sins. Thank You Jesus for the New Covenant of grace. Help us to live according to the promptings of the Holy Spirit. Thank You Lord. Amen
